States Proposing Tax Hikes on Booze
Forty-one out of the 50 United States are facing budget shortfalls, and many are looking to increase excise taxes on brewers and distillers in order to raise revenue to balance their budgets, a move that will directly affect retailers, on-premise establishments, and especially the consumer.
According to Bloomberg.com, “Kentucky last week approved a new 6 percent levy on all store-bought beer, wine and spirits, and at least 18 other states are considering proposals to charge drinkers more for liquor to narrow deficits. New York plans to more than double its beer and wine tax, while Oregon may increase its surcharge to $49.61 per 31-gallon (117-liter) barrel from $2.60.”"

Scientists Map Common Cold's Genome - Science & Health news | Newser: "Scientists Map Common Cold's Genome
Posted Feb 12, 09 4:43 PM CST in Science & Health
(Newser) – Researchers have completed a “family tree” for the common cold, paving the way for an eventual cure to one of mankind’s most stubborn ailments, the New York Times reports. Scientists mapped the genomes of the 99 variations of rhinovirus, which causes most colds, and have cataloged the weaknesses of specific strains. The rhinovirus’s wide genetic variation has long stymied efforts to find a cure."

Final Notice Regarding Discontinuation of LAUNCHcast Plus Service
Final Notice Regarding Discontinuation of LAUNCHcast Plus Service
As stated in the previous notice, Yahoo! Music has partnered with CBS Radio to power LAUNCHcast Radio. A new version of LAUNCHcast Radio will still be accessible from the Yahoo! site. However, it will be hosted and operated by CBS Radio rather than by Yahoo!. As part of the transition to CBS Radio, the LAUNCHcast Plus premium service will be closing on February 12, 2009.
Existing AT&T customers will no longer receive LAUNCHcast Plus as part of their AT&T membership after February 12, 2009. Even though the LAUNCHcast Plus subscription service will be discontinued, you will still have access to most of your favorite preprogrammed LAUNCHcast stations through the new CBS Radio-powered experience. The difference is that those radio stations will be supported by advertising and there will no longer be a commercial-free option.1 The new LAUNCHcast powered by CBS Radio will be launching on February 16, 2009.
With LAUNCHcast Radio powered by CBS Radio, you will also get access to some new features, including a new streaming radio player and CBS Radio\'s wide variety of local music, news, talk, and sports programming. The new radio player will also be compatible with Macintosh computers, and Firefox and Safari browsers. Not all existing LAUNCHcast features will continue, however. Your custom \"My Station\" and \"Moods\" Stations will no longer be available after February 16, 2009. Additionally, you will no longer be able to add \"Influencers\" to your personalized \"My Station\".
There is no need to cancel or do anything with your service to make the transition to CBS Radio. Yahoo! will not transfer any of your account information to CBS Radio. You will not have to pay for the new LAUNCHcast service since it will be supported by advertising.
We hope you will enjoy our new radio experience and the broader range of radio stations that it will bring.
MORE INFORMATION
For more information about LAUNCHcast Radio and the changes to the service, please refer to our Frequently Asked Questions.
1Radio station lineup is subject to change and we cannot guarantee that all stations will be available after the transition to CBS Radio.

stumbleuponIn our recent Social Bookmarking Faceoff, we discovered that social bookmarking site StumbleUpon actually has more users than the more hyped del.icio.us. Currently StumbleUpon has 1,375,696 users, according to its About page. Recently del.icio.us announced it had reached 1 million users. I grew even more curious about StumbleUpon's success after reading the comments on a recent post of ours, where a few StumbleUpon users left almost mystical comments about the product: 'I became a Stumbler in order to learn more about the world [and] it has been invaluable', noted one commenter.

What's got a button to push, knows how to make money while changing the world and is read all over? StumbleUpon! The social discovery network, like Pandora for webpages and videos, just passed 7 million users according to the site. That's about 50% bigger than Twitter, though Stumble is rarely talked about and never promoted. Every media personality on the planet is gaga over Twitter.

Technology Review: Don't Blame the Internet
Last year, after the social-networking site MySpace found that its members included some 29,000 registered sex offenders, the nation's top state prosecutors demanded a technological fix, asking that the industry "explore and develop age and identity verification tools for social networking web sites." But a new study concludes that such technologies are unlikely to thwart anonymous predators and that the threat facing children online is no worse than it is in the real world. more...

Atheists want God stricken from inaugural oath - Yahoo! News
WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama wants to conclude his inaugural oath with the words "so help me God," but a group of atheists is asking a federal judge to stop him.
California atheist Michael Newdow sued Chief Justice John Roberts in federal court for an injunction barring the use of those words in the inaugural oath.
Newdow and other atheists and agnostics also want to stop the use of prayers during the inaugural celebration.
Newdow, who lost a Supreme Court battle to get the words "under God" taken out of the Pledge of Allegiance, has failed in similar challenges to the use of religious words and prayers at President George W. Bush's inaugurations.
Roberts' attorney Jeffrey P. Minear filed a document in Newdow's lawsuit saying that Obama wants the words "so help me God" included in his oath of office.
The Justice Department and attorneys general from all 50 states have filed motions at the federal court asking for the lawsuit to be thrown out.
The oath dictated by the Constitution is 35 words long and reads: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
The National Archives says that George Washington added the words "so help me God" when he took the oath at his 1789 inaugural, and most presidents have used it since. However, some have argued that the first eyewitness account of a president using those words came at President Chester Arthur's inauguration in 1881.
Named in Newdow's lawsuit are Roberts; Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.; and the two pastors invited to the event, the Rev. Rick Warren and the Rev. Joseph Lowery.
U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton will hear arguments on Thursday.
